Humpday’s Happenings & Hyperlinks 12/15/10

Each Wednesday I’m going to share links to good articles/columns from recent happenings – with added insights and musings – from around the sporting world.  If you come across good articles, videos, etc. – please pass them along, I’d love to take a look.

College Football:

Nike unveiled new Pro Combat  bowl uniforms for Oregon, Boise State, Florida, and TCU. OBNUG was also on hand for the unveiling and got plenty of pictures and video.

As you probably know by now, Urban Meyer resigned as head coach at University of Florida last week. Florida Athletic Director Jeremy Foley quickly hired Will Muschamp the former defensive coordinator and head-coach-in-waiting at Texas.  I think Muchamp will have an excellent chance to succeed in Gainesville but should be wary of Meyer watching over his shoulder.

University of Miami (FL) announced the hiring of Al Golden as their new head coach on Sunday.  Al Golden certainly doesn’t have the same name recognition as Muschamp but Golden turned Temple from one of the worst programs in the country into a respectable bowl eligible team the past two seasons.

USA Today published the salaries and potential bonus amounts for 110 of the 120 college football coaches.  Most of the 10 coaches they weren’t able to obtain information on were private universities.

Surfing:

Surfline caught up with John Florence in-between contest days at the Billabong Pipeline Masters.  For those that don’t know, Florence has grown up on the North Shore of Oahu and first surfed Pipeline at the age of 8.  Florence will likely be one of the best and most knowledgeable surfers on the North Shore.

Medicine:

This has nothing to do with sports but doctors believe the first HIV positive man was cured thanks to a stem cell transplant in 2007.  If doctors can truly use genetically engineered stem cells  to cure HIV positive patients it would be an incredible break though in the medical world and excellent news for the entire world.

Any good stories/articles I missed?

Have a Happy Humpday Everyone!
