Humpday’s Happenings & Hyperlinks 12/8/10

Each Wednesday I’m going to share links to good articles/columns from recent happenings – with added insights and musings – from around the sporting world.  If you come across good articles, videos, etc. – please pass them along, I’d love to take a look.

College Football:

Jerry Palm of CollegeBCS.com found a mistake in the BCS rankings that incorrectly ranked LSU at #10 and Boise State at #11.  After adjusting the mistake,  Palm said the final BCS rankings should have Boise State at #10, and LSU at #11.  Fortunately for the BCS, the mistakes didn’t mean a whole lot this time but think about if the error incorrectly ranked the number 2 and 3 teams in the country…

Oregon wide receiver D.J. Davis wore a photo of  Notre Dame student Declean Sullivan on his uniform last weekend as a tribute to the 20 year old student who died earlier this year. An Oregon spokesman explained, “He has a brother the same age and said he couldn’t imagine having something like that happen to him.”  Even though I’m not a huge Ducks fan, that’s a pretty cool gesture by Davis.

The 2010 college football regular season concluded with Oregon and Auburn set to play in the National Championship game.  ESPN.com’s Mark Schlabach ranks each of the bowl games from 1 to 35 and also provided potential BCS match-ups if there weren’t selection rules (we can dream).  Speaking of bowl games, have you ever wonder what college football players receive as bowl gifts? Sports Business Journal has a list of gifts for all 35 bowls.

Lee Corso fans can sleep easy tonight –  the oversized mascot head of Corso was recovered and two Oregon fans are facing charges for stealing it from ESPN last weekend in Corvallis, Oregon .  The two fans were charged with felonies with the estimated value of the mascot head is $5,000.

Boise State offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin is rumored to be a top candidate for the the Texas offensive coordintor position.  Harsin has ties to Boise but I wouldn’t blame him for leaving for that kind of money and the offensive coordinator position for one of the biggest programs in the country.  The Broncos would miss him, but I would be interested to see who Petersen promoted or hired as the offensive coordinator at Boise State.

In case you missed it last week – the NCAA ruled Cam Newton eligible because it “does not have sufficient evidence” to prove that Cam knew his father was attempting to sell him. Riiiight.  I was shocked to hear that reasoning, basically every parent, uncle, “advisor, etc can now shop their son or daughter and simply insist the kid didn’t know.  Dan Wetzel says the NCAA decision on Newton opens Pandora’s box – I couldn’t agree more.

With that I give you: “Buying a Tiger” – a hilarious version of “Eye of the Tiger.”  Any auburn fans reading probably wont enjoy this video:

Surfing:

The Billabong Pipe Masters is expected to start today -  Pipe Masters has been referred to as “the Super Bowl of surfing” and is usually enjoyable to watch. Surfline has a preview of who to watch, strategies, and more. I will be watching to see how two “Pipe experts” – Bruce Irons and Jamie O’Brien – fare in the competition.   And if you missed the post last month – check out some of the dangers of surfing at Pipeline.

Soccer:

The 2018 and 2022 World Cup host countries were selected last week with the votes giving the bids Russia in 2018 and Qatar in 2022.  England (2018) and the United States (2022) were hopeful to host the tournaments but were undermined by a flawed voting system.  SI’s Grant Wahl says the decisions raise questions about FIFA’s integrity.  I’m  no expert on the World Cup bidding process but I was shocked to hear the U.S. lost to Qatar.

Samir Nasri had an excellent game for Arsenal scoring twice as he lead the Gunners to a 2-1 victory against Fulham last weekend. Enjoy the video of Nasri’s superb goals:

Any good stories/articles I missed?

Have a Happy Humpday Everyone!
