The Triple-Dub – What To Watch And Why
This is usually your weekend viewing guide – The best games of the weekend and why you should watch. Everything from College Football, to the English Premier League, to the NHL. However, I’m in Vegas this weekend so it’ll be more along the lines of what to watch, not so much why. I’m sure you understand.
The Triple-Dub: June 24th-26th
2011 NHL Draft:
- Friday June 24th
The draft will be televised Friday night at 7:00 PM ET on Versus - there are a handful of players that could go No. 1 overall to the Edmonton Oilers including – Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Adam Larsson, Jonathan Huberdeau, Sean Sean Couturier & Gabriel Landeskog. The Avs currently have the 2nd and 11th overall picks so I’ll have my eye on who they select after last year’s struggles.
Gold Cup:
- Saturday June 25th
United States vs Mexico – Gold Cup Final – 9:00 PM ET – FSC

The CONCACAF rivals will finally clash in the Gold Cup Final after the U.S. struggled at times during group play. The U.S. made the Final with a 1-0 victory over Panama and Mexico needed extra time to defeat Honduras 2-0 to reach the Final. Based on how the two teams have played throughout the tournament, El Tri has to be favored having scored 18 goals in 5 matches to the U.S.’s 7 goals . U.S. will be without forward Jozy Altidore who injured his hamstring in the quarter-final victory against Jamaica. Keep your eye on Mexican forward Javier Hernandez – aka “Chicharito” – who has scored 7 of El Tri’s goals and plays his club soccer at Manchester United. For the U.S. keep your eye on Clint Dempsey (pictured above) who tore up the Premier League this season and seems to be in better form than Landon Donovan. Saturday’s Final should be a good one!
2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup:
- Sunday June 26th
The Women’s World Cup starts this weekend in Germany with the host country among the favorites to win. The U.S. is the world’s No.1 team according to FIFA but were the last team to qualify for the tournament and haven’t won since 1999 on home soil. The U.S. Women open group play against North Korea on Tuesday. That’s about the extent of my Women’s soccer knowledge so here are Sunday’s games – the atmosphere for Germany’s opener should be electric:
Nigeria vs France – Group A – 8:45 AM ET – ESPN2
Germany vs Canada – Group A – 11:30 AM ET – ESPN
What are you watching this weekend?
