The Triple-Dub – What To Watch And Why

Your weekend viewing guide - The best games of the weekend and why you should watch.

The Triple-Dub: Nov 19th-20th

College Football:

It’s a pretty dreadful slate of games this weekend and of course all the good ones will be on at the same time. But anyway, here’s what I’ll be watching this weekend:

-Saturday Nov. 19th
#18 USC Trojans (8-2) @ #4 Oregon Ducks (9-1) (Autzen Stadium – Eugene, OR) 8:00 PM ET – ABC

USC WR Robert Woods

The Ducks are coming off a big win over Stanford but could be tested this week against Matt Barkley and USC. To pull off the upset, the Trojan’s need to not only protect Barkley but also take care of the football against an opportunistic Oregon defense. Monte Kiffin’s defense needs to slow down LaMichael James and De’Anthony Thomas – much easier said than done – and force Darron Thomas into passing situations. And lastly, Barkley needs Robert Woods – his best wide receiver – to play on Saturday. Woods is banged up and questionable according to Lane Kiffin so we’ll see if he can go. Even if the Trojans don’t play “the perfect game” I think we’ll still see both teams put some points on the board. Autzen will be electric on Saturday night – this should be a good one.

#10 Boise State Broncos (8-1) @ San Diego State Aztecs (6-3) (Qualcomm Stadium – San Diego, CA) 8:00 PM ET – CBS Sports Network

Really I’m just looking forward to seeing how Kellen Moore and especially the defense bounce back after last week’s heartbreaking loss to TCU. The Aztecs’ star running back Ronnie Hillman is questionable with a sprained ankle – he says he’s playing but coach Long isn’t so sure. If Hillman can’t go, the pressure will be on quarterback Ryan Lindley who has the arm to challenge Boise State’s young cornerbacks but we’ll see if his receivers and tight ends are also up to the task. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Broncos blow San Diego State out but it also wouldn’t shock me if they come out flat and end up winning a close game. I guess we’ll find out on Saturday night.

Other than that, I might casually the Big Game on the second TV while I slay on Modern Warfare 3 on the big TV:

California Golden Bears (6-4) @ #9 Stanford Cardinal (9-1) (Stanford Stadium – Palo Alto, CA) – 10:15 PM ET – ESPN

English Premier League:

-Saturday Nov. 19th
Arsenal (6-1-4 – 19 pts) @ Norwich City (3-4-4 – 13 pts) (Carrow Road – Norwich, England) 7:45 AM ET – ESPN2

I’m a Gooner – as if you didn’t know – and ESPN has the best soccer broadcasts in the U.S. so obviously I’ll be tuning in – I probably wont watch it live BUT my DVR will be set. The Gunners have won four straight and need to maintain their momentum after the atrocious start. Robin van Persie has been in excellent form having scored 28 goals in his last 29 league games – hopefully that continues on Saturday morning.

-Sunday Nov. 20th
Liverpool (5-4-2 – 19 pts) @ Chelsea (7-1-3 – 22 pts) (Stamford Bridge – London, England) 11:00 AM ET – FSC

Chelsea Striker Fernando Torres

After a decent start, the Blues have sputtered recently losing two of their last three EPL games while the Reds have three draws in their last four matches. Both teams need points to keep pace with the Manchester clubs. Both team are loaded with talent and  Fernando Torres gets to face his old mates. Hopefully we’ll get some goals on Sunday morning.

Major League Soccer:

Houston Dynamo @ Los Angeles Galaxy – MLS Cup Final – (Home Depot Center – Los Angeles, CA) 9:00 PM ET – ESPN

Instead of BSing about these two teams I’ll just say I don’t really follow MLS but do watch it on occasion and Sunday night will be one of those occasions when L.A. Galaxy plays Houston Dynamo for the MLS Cup.  The Galaxy have the more talented roster but anything can happen in a soccer game. Should be a great atmosphere at the Home Depot Center on Sunday night.
