Arsenal starts the 2011-12 campaign with uncertainty surrounding two of the club’s star midfielders - Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri – as both appear to be on their way out of the Emirates. With the club in apparent transition until the end of August (the end of the transfer window) it will be intriguing to see who Arsene Wenger chooses for his starting 11. Will we see Gervinho, who will take over Cesc’s role as captain and playmaker, and who will be the starting center backs? I’m sad to see Cesc go but look forward to see what direction Arsenal goes and what they can do without him.
I would like to forget about it, but have to mention Arsenal’s last visit to St. James Park when the Gunners blew a 4 goal lead to end up drawing 4-4. Newcastle’s epic comeback seemed to turn Arsenal south as they went on to lose the Carling Cup Final, to Barca in the Champions League, and eventually finishing 4th in the EPL. Three points and a solid performance would certainly help Arsenal’s confidence as they start the new season, presumably without their captain.
PGA Championship:
This year’s PGA Championship featured the return of Tiger Woods to the majors but it hasn’t worked out quite like Tiger had imagined. Tiger got off to a hot start but finished with a 77 (seven over par) putting him in danger of missing the cut. At the other end of the leaderboard is Steve Stricker who opened with a 63 (seven under-par) tying the lowest round shot in a major. If Tiger isn’t playing through the weekend and there aren’t any intriguing story lines, I’m not sure how much I’ll be watching but it’s definitely better than what’s been on (nothing) for the last several weeks.
