Week 2 College Football Predictions

As some of you know, I’ve partnered up with The Upset Blog to help provide some Mountain West content on their site. Along with the weekly power rankings and other content, we also predict a dozen or so games each weekend. Instead of just sending my predictions to them I figured I might as well post them on here each week too if I have time. Feel free to tell me how terrible my picks are, what your predictions are for the weekend or whatever you want, really.

I picked Oklahoma State to beat Arizona 38-31 last night but that was before I knew Arizona wide receiver Juron Criner would miss the game. The Cowboys still won so I guess that’s all that really matters. Here are the rest of my picks for the week:

Arizona State LB Vontaze Burfict

- Friday September 9th

#21 Missouri (1-0) at Arizona State (1-0) 10:30 PM ET — ESPN – The only thing I know about Missouri is that they only beat Miami (OH) 17-6 last week. All I know about Arizona State is that Dennis Erickson underachieves every season and LB Vontaze Burfict is a freak. No idea why I’m picking Erickson’s team, but I think the Sun Devils win at home. Missouri 14, Arizona State 24

-Saturday September 10th

Oregon State (0-1) at #8 Wisconsin (1-0) 12:00 PM ET — ESPN – Last week Oregon State lost to Sacramento State 29-28 while Wisconsin destroyed UNLV 51-17. This one has blowout written all over it but Mike Riley’s teams usually play their best when there isn’t much expected from them. The Badgers will win but I’m not expecting a blowout. Oregon State 28, Wisconsin 45

San Diego State (1-0) @ Army (0-1) 12:00 PM ET — CBS Sports – The Aztecs beat Cal Poly 49-21 thanks to 189 yards and 2 touchdowns from RB Ronnie Hillman and 4 TD passes from Ryan Lindley – these two will be too much for the Black Knights - San Diego State 31, Army 21

Nevada (0-0) at #13 Oregon (0-1) 3:30 PM ET — FX – After getting worked by LSU in the opener I’m expecting the Ducks offense to look much better, especially the run game. Nevada has historically struggled in season openers against BCS conference teams and they’ll be breaking in a new QB — not a good recipe. Nevada 20, Oregon 45

#25 TCU (0-1) at Air Force (1-0) 3:30 pm ET – Versus – Gary Patterson has his work cut out this week after a demoralizing loss to Baylor last Friday. TCU’s notoriously stout defense looked terrible (especially the secondary) giving up 414 passing yards and 50 points. Fortunately for the Horned Frogs, Air Force only attempted nine passes last week but I’m still not sure their young defense will be ready for the Falcon’s offense. This one was a toss-up for me. TCU 27, Air Force 28

California (1-0) at Colorado (0-1) 3:30 PM ET – FCS-Pacific – Both teams played WAC opponents last week – Cal beat Fresno State 36-21 while Colorado lost to Hawaii 34-17. California 28, Colorado 24

Hawaii (1-0) at Washington (1-0) 3:30 PM ET — Root Sports – Hawaii was more impressive against a Pac-12 team (Colorado) than Washington was against a FSC team (Eastern Washington) last week. Unfortunately for the Pac-12 I think the rough start continues. Hawaii 31, Washington 28

UNLV (0-1) at Washington State (1-0) 5:00 PM ET – I wouldn’t be surprised to see either terrible program win this game. Paul Wulff has been at WSU longer than Bobby Hauck has been at UNLV and should have a more talented roster since he’s in the Pac-12.  UNLV 24, Washington State 31

BYU (1-0) at #24 Texas (1-0) 7:00 PM ET — ESPN – I’m actually pretty excited for this one. BYU seems to have improved on both sides of the ball. Jake Heaps has a year of experience and Bryan Harsin installed Boise State’s offense down in Austin after last year’s debacle. I’m sure both teams would love a 2-0 start after their struggles last season but I think the Longhorns get it done at home. BYU 21, Texas 27

Utah (1-0) at USC (1-0) 7:30 PM ET — Versus – Neither team was particularly impressive against inferior competition last week as both were perhaps looking ahead to this week. After USC’s terrible performance last week against Minnesota I have no idea why I think the Trojans will win, but I do. Utah 24, USC 29

Weber State (0-1) at Utah State (0-1) 8:00 PM ET – Utah State was this close to upsetting the defending BC$ champions on the road last week. There’s no reason the Aggies should lose to Weber State at home. Weber State 21, Utah State 38

Season Record: 13-4
